Recent Reads – Sloe Ride by Rhys Ford

RecentReads

Another auto-buy author for me is Rhys Ford. My absolute favorite series is the Cole McGinnis series, but really I love all of Rhys Ford’s books. The Sinner’s series is right up there with the rest of my faves so I finally caught up with Sloe Ride, the fourth Sinners book. It was so great to revisit Miki, the band, Kane, and the rest of the Morgans. Like coming home. I felt for Rafe. He’d made a lot of mistakes in his past, but he desperately wanted a second chance, even if at times he felt he didn’t deserve it. Quinn, I just loved him. I wanted to curl around him and protect him from the world, even if he could do a perfectly good job of protecting himself.

I loved reading Quinn’s point of view, what it was like to be a Morgan without a badge. I understood his frustrations with his family, especially his brothers. The scene in the bathroom with Miki and Quinn, ugh, it shattered my heart. And I loved how Rafe saw Quinn, really saw him the way no one else in Quinn’s life ever had. They way he describes Quinn, his beauty, his way of looking at the world was beautiful. Overall, an incredibly enjoyable addition to the Sinners series.

<3 Happy reading!

Sloe Ride by Rhys Ford eBookSequel to Tequila Mockingbird
Sinners Series: Book Four

It isn’t easy being a Morgan. Especially when dead bodies start piling up and there’s not a damned thing you can do about it.

Quinn Morgan never quite fit into the family mold. He dreamed of a life with books instead of badges and knowledge instead of law—and a life with Rafe Andrade, his older brothers’ bad boy friend and the man who broke his very young heart.

Rafe Andrade returned home to lick his wounds following his ejection from the band he helped form. A recovering drug addict, Rafe spends his time wallowing in guilt, until he finds himself faced with his original addiction, Quinn Morgan—the reason he fled the city in the first place.

When Rafe hears the Sinners are looking for a bassist, it’s a chance to redeem himself, but as a crazed murderer draws closer to Quinn, Rafe’s willing to sacrifice everything—including himself—to keep his quixotic Morgan safe and sound.

SummaryCharmed Divider

Magic takes many forms. From malignant hexes to love charms gone amok, you’ll find a vast array of spells and curses, creatures and conjurings in this massive collection—not to mention a steamy dose of man-on-man action. Charmed and Dangerous features all-new stories of gay paranormal romance, supernatural fiction and urban fantasy by ten top m/m paranormal authors.

Rhys Ford – Dim Sum Asylum
For Detective Roku MacCormick, working Arcane Crimes is his passion. Now cleared of any wrongdoing for shooting his last partner, MacCormick is given back his badge… as well as a new case and partner. Trent Leonard isn’t exactly what he’d expected, but then nothing in San Francisco’s Chinatown ever is.

Ginn Hale – Swift and the Black Dog
When Jack Swift killed a tyrant and won the revolution he became a national hero. But someone in the new government prefers dead heroes to living, swearing, cynical wizards. Caught between bullets, revenge and desire, Jack had better be swift indeed.

KJ Charles – A Queer Trade
Apprentice magician Crispin Tredarloe returns to London to find his master dead, and his papers sold. Papers with secrets that could spell death. Waste paper seller Ned Hall can’t resist Crispin’s pleading—and appealing—looks. But can the wasteman and the magician prevent a disaster and save Crispin’s skin?

Nicole Kimberling – Magically Delicious
Occult attacks against NIAD agents aren’t remotely Keith Curry’s department. But when his lover, Gunther, is assaulted, Keith refuses to just sit back and fill out paperwork. He’s on the case—even if that means enraging powerful mages, crossing leprechaun picket lines, or braving dinner with Gunther’s goblin parents.

Jordan Castillo Price – Everyone’s Afraid of Clowns
Psychic medium Victor Bayne can spot a ghost any day of the year, but Halloween holds some special surprises. His psych-groupie boyfriend Jacob coaxes him to the location of an old spirit sighting, but they can’t ghosthunt without enduring a cheesy “haunted house” that’s even more disturbing than they realize.

Jordan L. Hawk – The Thirteenth Hex
Hexman Dominic Kopecky doesn’t understand why dashing crow familiar Rook wants his help investigating murder by patent hex. For one thing, Dominic isn’t a witch. For another, the case is already closed—and someone is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Charlie Cochet – The Soldati Prince
Riley Murrough goes from serving lattes to being chased by demons. If that wasn’t bad enough, he bears the mark of a shapeshifter king from a magical realm. Riley’s determined to get answers, but if the demons out for his blood don’t kill him, the urge to strangle the arrogant king might.

Lou Harper – One Hex Too Many
Veteran detective Mike Mulligan is an expert on violent crimes—of the occult variety. He might even be cursed. Detective Hugh Fox is eager to partner up and prove himself, but Mulligan is accustomed to flying solo. Can they trust each other enough to track a killer who’ll stop at nothing, not even summoning a demon?

Andrea Speed – Josh of the Damned vs. the Bathroom of Doom
It’s a boring night at the Quik-Mart for Josh and his friend Doug. Until a vampire with a grudge—and the most adorable backup ever—crashes the store. Can Josh survive the Bathroom of Doom?

Astrid Amara – The Trouble With Hexes
P.I. Tim Keller has a problem. And the only person who can solve it is his ex-boyfriend, Vincent, whose job as a hexbreaker was the reason they broke up. It’s hard admitting he was wrong, especially when coughing up organs. But there’s a missing person to find, a hexmaker to hunt down, and a romance to repair before Tim breathes his last.

Book of the Week: Tequila Mockingbird

CCochetBooks
While I was at RainbowCon, I attended the series writing panel where I amazingly won two ebooks from the fabulous Rhys Ford. As you imagine, I have been fangirling since. One of the books I received was an ARC of Tequila Mockingbird.

Now, I have to say that I LOVE the Sinners Series. From the moment I met the Morgan clan in Sinner’s Gin, I was a goner. How can you not love each and every one of them? Each Sinners book seems to get even better than the last and Tequila Mockingbird doesn’t disappoint. The story was sexy, sweet, funny, and heartwarming. I love that we get to revisit previous couples from the series and enjoyed watching their lives intertwine.

Forest’s character was strong yet vulnerable. He has a troubled past he’s trying to put behind him, but certain circumstances keep getting in the way. It’s heartbreaking, especially one particular source of Forest’s pain. Luckily, there’s Lieutenant Conner Morgan to catch Forest and lend him his strength, not to mention other members of the Morgan clan. Forest is a great addition to the Sinners family and he deserved so much love.

Getting to know Conner Morgan was engrossing. As the oldest Morgan and a SWAT Lieutenant, you expect him to be this serious, no-nonsense kind of guy, but Conner has a sweet, softer side, one that comes out especially around Forest. Conner had his own struggles, despite being brought up in a loving and accepting family. I loved how once he made up his mind, he used that Conner courage to follow through.

If you haven’t read the Sinners series I highly recommended. And now, I just have one question for Ms. Ford: When can we expect Quinn and Rafe’s book?

Blurb

Lieutenant Connor Morgan of SFPD’s SWAT division wasn’t looking for love. Especially not in a man. His life plan didn’t include one Forest Ackerman, a brown-eyed, blond drummer who’s as sexy as he is trouble. His family depends on him to be like his father, a solid pillar of strength who’ll one day lead the Morgan clan.

No, Connor has everything worked out—a career in law enforcement, a nice house, and a family. Instead, he finds a murdered man while on a drug raid and loses his heart comforting the man’s adopted son. It wasn’t like he’d never thought about men — it’s just loving one doesn’t fit into his plans.

Forest Ackerman certainly doesn’t need to be lusting after a straight cop, even if Connor Morgan is everywhere he looks, especially after Frank’s death. He’s just talked himself out of lusting for the brawny cop when his coffee shop becomes a war zone and Connor Morgan steps in to save him. Whoever killed his father seems intent on Forest joining him in the afterlife. As the killer moves closer to achieving his goal, Forest tangles with Connor Morgan and is left wondering what he’ll lose first—his life or his heart.

Survived My First Video Chat, plus GRL News!

CharlieRoseHello all! Phew! Well today was kind of a crazy day. First, I registered for GRL, and this year I’ll be going as a Featured Author. Woot! I heard the slots went in like 3 minutes, which is pretty insane. I know some folks are upset they couldn’t get in, but I hope it doesn’t stop them from attending. I had an amazing time last year as a general attendee.

The last two years, I got to hang out with some amazing folks: readers, reviewers, photographers, artists, fellow authors, publishers, you name it. Last year I fangirled over other authors, participated in a lot of hugs, had a haunted beer with Jordan Castillo Price, and Jordan L. Hawk, got to meet my awesome author bud Michael Rupured in person–and helped him with his Fabio wig for the costume party. My roomies rocked, the events were such fun, and I’d do it all over again.

By the time GRL comes along, 3 out of 4 of my THIRDS series should  be out both in eBook and paperback, providing all goes according to schedule. A Rose By Any Other Name should be available by then in eBook and paperback as well, so this year I’ll actually have books on the Dreamspinner Press table, not to mention have books to sign!!

The last few days I’ve been working on the THIRDS series website, including three custom logos: the THIRDS logo, and the two uniform patches the team wears. I’m SO excited with how they came out. *happy dance* I’ll be slapping them on swag for sure! So there’s a lot happening with this series, and I’ll start revealing bits and pieces soon. Now, the second thing that happened today:

I survived my first video chat!! Well, I was incredibly nervous. You might be able to tell from my little bits of stumbling, but it was a great experience. Amy Lane, Rhys Ford, and Ariel Tachna were so fantastic. I really enjoyed myself, and hope to make it more of a regular thing. I’m trying to work my way up to *gulp* an author reading. Here’s the video. Be gentle. (If you’re reading this on Goodreads, the video won’t show, but you can see it on my blog or on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_k55GHGzj4

THIRDS Update, Book Covers, and General Shenanigans

CharlieRoseHello all! The last few days I’ve been recuperating after (finally!) turning in Blood & Thunder, THIRDS Book 2 in to my publisher over the weekend (plus finishing a whole bunch of other things, -_-). I’m now working on Book 3, and trying to figure out what kind of covers I want for the series [cue ominous music]. Sometimes I know exactly what I want for a cover, and then other times I want to curl up, and weep.

There are so many options to consider before you even get to the content. Like drawn or photo? People or graphics? What kind of style? Then trying to figure out what I actually want on the cover. I’ve been going back and forth for days. Dreamspinner has an awesome art department with equally awesome artists, so that’s not the problem. I’ve just kept drawing a blank. NOW I think I’ve got it. I think my problem was establishing a tone for the covers, because although it’s a romance series, there’s an equal balance of comedy and drama, and I want that to be reflected on the covers. I want the covers to stand out, so I think I may be taking a chance on the road less traveled with these, but hopefully it’ll work.

I’m working on Rack & Ruin, THIRDS Book 3, plus working on production for Book 1. I think with each book I complete, the more nervous I get. I’ve never finished writing a whole series before the first book even gets close to release. I’m also working on the website, and hope to get that up before June.

Now for other news, Some of you may or may not know I did a guest post on Guy Like Romance, Too! where I shared links to Love in Bloom – A Chance & Jacky Valentine’s Day Special. If you missed it, you can still read or download the story from my Free Reads page. http://www.charliecochet.com/free-reads/

As part of my newsletter, I’m including exclusive content for readers, and February’s newsletter included The Perfect Valentine’s Day – A Little Bit of Love Valentine’s Day Special, featuring Trip & Boone. If you fancy signing up to my newsletter, you can do so here: http://www.charliecochet.com/newsletter If you signed up too late to get the Feb newsletter, just let me know you signed up, and would like Feb’s newsletter (drop me an email or fill out the contact form) and I’ll forward you a copy.

Don’t forget, this weekend is my live chat with the fantabulous Amy Lane, and Rhys Ford. We’ll be answering reader questions live on Google Hangouts. So drop by at 5 pm (Eastern Time), this Sat Feb 22nd to see if we answered your questions. I’ll be posting the  direct link as soon as I get it.

There’s still time to submit questions for any or all of us. Just leave them here, on Amy or Rhy’s blog, or the Dreamspinner blog: http://dreamspinnerpress.com/blog/2014/02/10/fireside-chat-february-22/

Also, the rights to quite a few of my stories are reverting to me for my Torquere Press books, so they start becoming unavailable from the end of this month. When Love Walked In will become unavailable from around the 27th of Feb, and The Amethyst Cat Caper will become unavailable around the same time. I’m hoping to revisit all my short stories, though I haven’t decided whether to make them longer, and re-release them, or put them together in an anthology. The Amethyst Cat Caper I intend to re-edit, and turn it into a full length novel, but obviously it won’t be re-released until next year.

What do you think? Should I re-edit, extend them to novellas. Or re-edit, and put them together in a short story anthology with a new short story or two?

Next Weekend: My Video Chat with Amy Lane & Rhys Ford!!

firesidechatbanner

Hello all! I am SUPER excited to announce that on Saturday, Feb 22nd at 5 PM (EST), I’ll be taking part in a video chat with the fabulous Amy Lane and Rhys Ford! [insert fangirl squee here]

Dreamspinner Press has introduced these video chats as a way for readers to get to know their favorite authors. The best part (aside getting to hang with these awesome ladies), is you get to ask YOUR questions. All you have to do is leave your question on the Fireside Chats post at the Dreamspinner blog. You can ask a question for all three or for individual authors. ** If you have a question for a particular author, make sure you specify which author, or all three will consider the question.

http://dreamspinnerpress.com/blog/2014/02/10/fireside-chat-february-22/

You can also leave your questions here, and I’ll forward them onto Dreamspinner. As soon as I have the link to the chat, I’ll post it, and the video should be available on YouTube not long after.

This week’s Recommended Reads.

CharlieRoseOver the weekend I managed to get in a couple of reads. I’d been eager to read Stormhaven for a while now, but hadn’t had the time. I just couldn’t wait anymore, and was up until about 4 am one evening. I love that series soooo much!  Excuse me while I….

right-in-the-feels

Stormhaven (Whyborn & Griffin #3) by Jordan L. Hawk
Fish & Ghosts (Hellsinger #1) by Rhys Ford

(click on the titles for my thoughts on each one) Both are fave authors of mine, and I had such a great time reading these. The Whyborne & Griffin series just keeps getting better and better. I’m always so excited when the next book comes out. The Hellsinger series had a great start, and I’m looking forward to the next book!

I’ve been on somewhat of a paranormal kick recently, loving every moment of it, but then after reading these authors: Jordan L. Hawk, Rhys Ford, Shira Anthony, Piper Vaughn, KJ Charles, can you blame me?

Coming next: After Christmas Eve by Michael Rupured, and Polyester Prince by Hayley B. James.
