#TeaserTuesday – 7/18/17 Finding Mr. Wrong

This week’s #TeaserTuesday is from Finding Mr. Wrong, my upcoming Dreamspun Desires book which is now available for preorder from Dreamspinner Press! Happy Reading!

“Don’t you see? It makes so much sense now.”

“What?”

“Why you’re so scared of relationships.”

Matthew scoffed. “I’m not scared of relationships.” He’d been in plenty of relationships. Granted, they didn’t last very long, but that wasn’t his fault.

“Really? What happened to Mr. Wall Street?”

“You mean besides the fact that he was a jackass? He was clingy.”

“Clingy? He texted you to say he had a great time and wanted to see you again.”

“I know, but I could tell it wasn’t going to work.”

“You went on one date!”

“It was a long date. I got to know him well enough.”

“Oh, Matthew. Jax was the first boy you fell for. He abandoned you, shattered your sweet little heart, and now you’re afraid of it happening again, so you won’t let anyone get close to you. The second you find yourself facing more than a casual hookup, you’re out of there. I’ve read about this.”

Matthew rolled his eyes. “Here we go. How many times do I have to tell you? Romance novels don’t count as reliable reference material.”

“Hey, a lot of research goes into those books.”

“Yes, I’m sure scouring the internet for the right six-pack is arduous work.”

Adam looked unimpressed. “Maybe if you actually read one of the many books I’ve recommended, you’d see how there’s more to them than six-packs. Might even teach you a thing or two about romance.”

“For crying out loud. Fine. I’ll read one of your damn books. Can we please get back to what we were discussing?”

“Right. Jax breaking your heart. That would explain the countless men.”

“Countless? Really?”

“Okay, maybe not countless. We are talking about you.”

“Thanks.”

“What happened to Jax?”

Matthew sighed. “I tried looking for him once, but when I couldn’t find him, I gave up. It wasn’t like he’d bothered looking for me, so I clearly hadn’t meant that much to him. He probably forgot all about me.”

“You’re adorable.”

“Shut it.” If Matthew had really meant something to Jax, Jax would have gotten in touch. It wasn’t like Matthew was hard to find. Hart & Home’s website had his bio and credentials, as well as contact information. All Jax had to do was google Matthew, and done, but Jax hadn’t bothered once in the twenty years that had gone by. That was all Matthew needed to know about Jax’s feelings on the matter. For all Matthew knew, the guy could be married, have a bunch of kids, be happily in love and enjoying his life.

“Okay, so let’s get back to finding you a husband. Let’s make a list.” Adam took the pad and pen from Matthew’s desk and . “Tell me about your Mr. Right.”

Were they really doing this? Whatever. If it meant Matthew finding a husband, he’d go along with it. “Well, someone who’s kind.”

“Hot,” Adam added.

Matthew rolled his eyes. “Compassionate.”

“Great in bed.”

“Has a sense of humor.”

“Big and strong.”

Matthew narrowed his gaze at Adam. “Are we looking for my Mr. Right or yours?”

Adam’s bright green eyes filled with mischief. “Seeing as how I’m already searching….”

“You’re terrible. Okay, someone who likes animals, especially dogs.”

“Basically you’re looking for a nice guy who’s hot, compassionate, great in bed, is big and strong, has a good education, a good job, a sense of humor, and likes dogs.” Adam smiled at him. “Piece of cake.” He continued to jot things down.

“What are you writing?”

“Just adding a few bonus traits.”

Matthew released another groan.

“Don’t you worry about a thing. I’ve got this.”

“I’m a little scared right now.”

Adam waggled his eyebrows.

“That doesn’t reassure me. If anything, I’m even more scared.”

“You know, you could just ask your mom. She’d have them lined up out the door.”

The thought terrified Matthew, and Adam laughed—no doubt at his horrified expression.

Recent Reads – Lickety Split by Damon Suede

Damon Suede is an exceptional storyteller. Whether you’re hearing him speak at a conference or having a one on one chat with him, it’s clear he knows how to arouse emotion in his audience. He’s well-versed in the art of inspiring others, and his writing is no different. Lickety Split is a fantastically well-crafted story that resonates with the reader, evoking a spectrum of emotions from compassion to sizzling excitement, and everything in between. It’s the story of two very different, very imperfect men whose paths collide once again. Now they have a chance at something they never thought they wanted, and didn’t know they needed.

Patch Hastle lives life in the fast lane. As a model and DJ, he knows where he’s going and the quickest way to get there, until the unexpected death of his parents force him to head back to East Texas. At sixteen, Patch took off for NYC and never looked back. He has every intention of dealing with his family’s farm as fast as he can, and even had his timeline worked out. He’ll be back in NYC opening the club of his dreams in no time. During the reading of his family’s will, Patch finds himself having to deal with the one man he’d hoped to avoid, his father’s best friend, Tucker Biggs. Patch has nothing but bad memories of Tucker, a man who made Patch’s life hell in high school.

Lickety Split is told through Patch’s point of view, and I love how we get to experience his emotions along with him. We get to feel his anger and pain as he remembers Tucker Biggs and what life was like for Patch in high school. Patch hates Tucker with every fiber of his being, but he also wants him badly.

Tucker Biggs is a handsome cowboy who’s been caretaker to the Hastle farm for years. He knows that Patch hates him and he’s hoping to make amends. Where Patch sees a man who made his life hell, Tucker believes he was just doing right by his best friend by looking out for Patch and trying to keep him out of trouble. Patch was nothing but his best friend’s pain in the ass kid, but now Patch is all grown up, and looking like sin.

Slow burn has nothing on Tucker Biggs, and he’s about to teach Patch a thing or three on the subject. Trucker is amazing and fascinating. He knows he’s made a lot of mistakes in his past, and doesn’t try to justify his actions. He’s a man who hides nothing. He is who he is. He’s also a man who knows what he likes, and how to take his time. The intimate scenes between Tucker and Patch are as scorching as the Texas heat.

I loved following these two men on their journey, loved watching how Patch matured and began to see that things might not have been how he’d made them out to be in his head. We feel for him as he starts to realize he could have been wrong about Tucker, his parents, and the home he grew up in. My heart broke for Patch because it happens all too often. We get so wrapped up in our hurt and anger, that we don’t realize what we have until it’s gone, and by then it’s too late to make amends, too late for conversations, or forgiveness. We watch as Patch starts to question his perceptions, his dreams, and his future. Patch and Tucker move through life at different speeds, but when they come together it’s clear that together they set the perfect pace.

Lickety Split: love won’t wait.

Patch Hastle grew up in a hurry, ditching East Texas for NYC to make his name as a DJ and model without ever looking back. When his parents die unexpectedly, he heads home to unload the family farm ASAP and skedaddle. Except the will left Patch’s worst enemy in charge: his father’s handsome best friend who made his high school years hell.

Tucker Biggs is going nowhere. Twenty years past his rodeo days, he’s put down roots as the caretaker of the Hastle farm. He knows his buddy’s smartass son still hates his guts, but when Patch shows up growed-up, looking like sin in tight denim, Tucker turns his homecoming into a lesson about old dogs and new kinks.

Patch and Tucker fool around, but they can’t fool themselves. Once the farm’s sold, they mean to call it quits and head off to separate sunsets. With the clock ticking, the city slicker and his down-home hick get roped into each other’s life. If they’re gonna last longer than spit on a griddle, they better figure out what matters—fast.

Recent Reads – Take Two by Shira Anthony

RecentReads

Hello, all! This week I had the pleasure of reading Shira Anthony‘s Take Two, a sweet story about second chances. I’m a sucker for a good romcom, and this played out in my head a la Hollywood movie style. I could see it up on the screen, the kind of movie where you’d get cozy with your fuzzy socks, super soft throw blanket, and your favorite beverage. Take Two tells the story of two men very much in love, but just like in real life, they’ve discovered that love alone is not enough to sustain a relationship or a marriage. Wesley and Sam have been married for ten years, getting together back before both their careers took off. Wesley is a professor, and Sam is a Hollywood star.

One of the things I love about this story is the way the author weaves in scenes of the couple throughout their relationship so you really start to see why Wesley filed for divorce, and your heart breaks for him. The way he just hung on, waiting for Sam, his heart clinging on to the moments he could spend with Sam, always being patient and understanding. I also loved that it wasn’t just a matter of getting back together. Things had to change.

On the outside, Sam appears to be perfect. A sinfully handsome man who’s charming, talented, and a true romantic, but the more we got to know Sam, the more we could see his flaws. Watching Wesley and Sam both grow, and learn, seeing them rediscover each other was just wonderful. Oh, and drunk Wesley is the best thing ever. Just saying. If you enjoy sweet romance, second chances, swashbuckling, humor, and suspense, I think you’ll enjoy Take Two.

take-twoLights, camera, action! When Professor Wesley Coolidge accepts a summer job as a historical consultant to a pirate movie being filmed in North Carolina, the last person he expects to bump into is his soon-to-be ex, movie star Sander Carson.

Just like the flamboyant pirate he’s playing, Sander, aka Sam Carr, is used to getting what he wants, and he makes it clear he wants Wesley back in his life. Sam lost Wesley when he left their life in New York City behind for a career in Hollywood. But Wesley has finally managed to put the pieces of his heart back together, and he isn’t interested in Sam and Wesley: The Sequel.

Convincing Wesley to give their relationship a second chance will take much more than Sam’s apologies and reminders of good times past. If Sam wants Wesley back, he’ll have to show Wesley that they really can sail into the sunset together—a real-life happily-ever-after that won’t end once the final credits roll.

Recent Reads – Middle of Somewhere series by Roan Parrish

RecentReads

On the plane ride to RT last month I started to read In The Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish. It came highly recommended by a close friend. I usually don’t read on planes because I get restless, and all I want is to get to my destination. Flying is not my favorite. This was one of those rare occasions I actually wanted the flight to be a bot longer so I could continue to read my book. I don’t read very many first person present tense stories. Can’t remember the last one I did, but this one had me hooked from the beginning. I loved Daniel and Rex, loved getting to know them, watching them fall in love. I felt for Daniel. His situation was a familiar one, and I wanted to see him succeed, wanted him to get his happily ever after.

The author did a fabulous job of slowly building the relationship between Daniel and Rex. She also did an amazing job slowly revealing their characters. Rex was a mystery at first. This big, handsome lumberjack of a guy who lived by himself in a cabin in the middle of snowy nowhere. We get to know him as Daniel does, learn little secrets, heartbreaking stories about his past as well as the challenges he faces at the present. Daniel’s family infuriated me, and soon I started to suspect why Colin was such a jackass to his brother.

Which of course brings me to Out of Nowhere, Colin and Rafe’s book. The more I read Colin, the more I felt for him. He was filled with so much anger and self-loathing. I loved that both he and Rafe had very real, very deep flaws, both battling their demons on a daily bases. I was exhausted for Colin, having to keep up with all the secrets and lies. Colin isn’t good for Rafe. He’s on a destructive path that Rafe needs to stay away from for his own good. Reading about these two men, their fight to just get by, to make it through another day without destroying themselves was heartbreaking, and I was rooting for them to get through it, to find a way to be together.

Both these stories were superb, and I absolutely loved them. I was up until the wee hours of the morning reading when I should have been sleeping, but you know, who needs sleep when you’re in the middle of a good book? Highly recommend this series.

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish PaperbackMiddle of Somewhere: Book One

Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in—not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel’s relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he’s a city boy through and through, and it’s clear that this small town is one more place he won’t fit in.

Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.

When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.

Out of Nowhere by Roan Parrish Paperback

Middle of Somewhere: Book Two

The only thing in Colin Mulligan’s life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he’s gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he’s ashamed of. He’s dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

As the owner of Apple’n Pies, Joe Applin leads a quiet, uneventful life, content to spend his days serving customers who come from all over to eat his delicious homemade pies. Along with his motley crew—Bea, Elsie, and Donnie—Joe couldn’t be happier in his little kingdom of baked goods and java.

Experience has taught Joe that love is overrated—and at times dangerous. He has no intention of repeating past mistakes. But then he meets a mysterious, handsome man with amnesia, and Joe can’t deny something sweet is in the works. He isn’t one to take risks, not with his heart and certainly not with his life, but the more time he spends with the man he knows as Tom, the closer he is to losing both.

Book of the Week: What Can Brown Do For You?

CCochetBooksI love short stories. They’re also especially difficult to write. Trying to tell a complete story with character development, plot, and romance in a span of just a few pages can be harder than writing a  novel. Which is why it’s always a treat to come across one I really enjoy. Hunter Frost’s debut story is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what she gives us next.

I admit, I love romance stories with geeks, seeing that I’m one myself. I might not play world of WoW, but I’m definitely geeky in other ways. I loved Sean. He was sweet, funny, and oh so awkward. I could certainly relate to his plight. And then we have the sexy UPS guy who’s more than what he seems.

In 33 pages, we get everything a short story should have, and by the end, I wish there was more, so much more. But it’s a short story and I accept that. The characters are well rounded, and Ms. Frost has a fabulous way of letting you know plenty about each man through his actions and reactions. We get description, plot, humor, romance, and some hotness. You might never look at the UPS guy the same way again. A very well written and thoroughly entertaining story. Highly recommended.
