Nights in the roaring city remind bright young things that life’s too short to take for granted. Tucked away in Times Square hides the Pantheon: a secret cabaret for wealthy gay men. Pretty young men in elaborate costumes and rouged lips are eager to please, and the champagne flows all night long. It’s a world of frivolity, fantasy, and debauchery. As Eros, the most sought after performer at the Pantheon, Julius uses his beauty and charm on enthusiastic patrons, but growing weary of superficial love, he longs to make a better life for himself.

Five years after being declared mentally unfit after surviving the trenches of No Man’s Land, Edward Joseph Clarence Junior pieced his shattered life back together. Now he’s ready to take on the family empire. To celebrate his thirtieth birthday, Edward’s cousin takes him to the most posh nightclub in town, the Pantheon. Falling under the sway of Eros, Edward and Julius find a love they’ve never imagined and the chance for a future they had only dared to dream about. But as Ares, a notorious gangster and Julius’s most important—and dangerous— client watches them, the threat to their love and their lives grows by the day.

Excerpt

“There you are. I’ve been looking for you two for—” Eros stopped in his tracks and stared at Edward. “You’re here. Again.”

Edward stood and took Eros’s hand, giving it a kiss. “I thought maybe after the second or third night you would have believed me.” The young man looked absolutely stunning as always, the gold cloth wrapped low on his slim hips working a now familiar magic.

Eros wasted no time in removing his hand from Edward’s grasp. “What reason do I have to believe someone who broke into my dressing room and then lied to me about who he was?”

Well, this was certainly news to him. “I said I was an executive for Clarence and Company Department Stores, which I am.”

Eros leaned toward him, his voice lowered. “You seemed to have conveniently left out the tiny detail concerning you also being heir to the Clarence and Company multimillion dollar fortune.”

“Does it matter?” It wasn’t as though Edward wished to go about advertising his wealth, but he wouldn’t have thought Eros had any reason to be discreet about it.

“Does it—?” Eros shook his head and let out a humorless laugh. “I don’t have time for this.”

Perhaps it was time for Edward to get to the heart of the matter and the reason why Eros was doing his best to avoid Edward to the point of being brazen with him when every chorus boy, cupid, and Ancient Greek deity seemed to be in a constant state of frenzy each night in the hopes of roping themselves a wealthy patron.

“Have I done something to offend you?” Edward took hold of Eros’s hand again, refusing to let it go. After the second tug, Eros let out a sigh and left his hand in Edward’s grip. Eros was absolutely enchanting, even when he was irritated.

“No, nothing. I apologize.”

Then it struck him. How could he not have seen it? He’d been looking at this all wrong. The thought had Edward smiling from ear to ear. “It’s not me you’re upset with, is it? You’re upset with yourself.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Eros scoffed. “I happen to be quite fond of myself.”

“You were hoping I’d be here.”

Eros tugged at his hand again. “Well, aren’t we sure of ourselves. For Pete’s sake, would you let go of my hand?”

“You’ve been curious about me since we met. Only now you know the extent of my wealth, you feel threatened. You believe I’ll be no better than the others, wanting nothing more from you than what I pay for, and it’s disappointed you.”

Eros narrowed his eyes at him, at which point Edward promptly let go of his hand. For a love God, Eros certainly had one hell of a murderous glare. Edward was pushing his luck, but he went with his gut feeling.

“Edward, if I felt threatened by a man’s wealth, I would hardly be in this line of work. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. I feel empowered.”

Eros closed the distance between them and ran his hands slowly up Edward’s chest, over his shoulders, and down his back, smiling triumphantly when Edward gave a start at the feel of Eros’s fingers digging into his backside.

“You see, you may have wealth, but I have the power to take it away.”

Eros gave a low, sultry moan before running his tongue over his bottom lip. Pressing himself against Edward, one hand discreetly moved around the front to grip Edward through his trousers. Edward shut his eyes, willing himself to breathe.

“I can feel how hard you’re getting, Edward. Don’t play games with me, or I will make you wish you never set foot in here. Do you think I haven’t come across men like you before?”

His hand slowly started to stroke Edward through his trousers.

“Jesus,” Edward breathed, his hands going to Eros’s shoulders. He had to put a stop to this madness. It was clear Eros was willing to take this as far as he needed to in order to get his point across, and Edward was foolish enough to stand here and let him.

“Honey-sweet words mean little to me, Edward. Do you know how many men have offered to whisk me away from my filthy, devious life? Put me up in some Fifth Avenue penthouse, pay me an allowance, and give me anything I wish for? Do you want to make me your personal whore?”

Edward gently pushed Eros away, drawing a look of surprise from him. “Enough. I neither believe so little of you nor of myself. I won’t have my character insulted. If you have the power to take my wealth as you say you do, why didn’t you take it? You saw how eager I was, yet you continually push me away.”

“You turned him away?” Pothos asked, gaping at Eros.

“Of course not.” Eros lifted his chin defiantly and took a step back. “He stated he would make an arrangement with Aphrodite, and I didn’t object.”

“Only after I refused to leave,” Edward reminded him. “You had ample opportunity to take what you wanted from me, yet all you wanted was for me to leave. Why? What are you afraid of?”

Eros rolled his eyes. “Being bored to death. Honestly, why aren’t you doing Vaudeville with your act? I choose my clients, Edward, and I didn’t choose you. Your bruised ego will simply have to get over it. Now if you will excuse me.”

“Why haven’t you told anyone else who I am? Do you refuse to share me, or are you protecting me?” Edward held back a smile when Eros spun around and marched back to poke him in the chest.

“You seem to have developed this ridiculous notion I care about what you do, Edward. I haven’t spoken of it to anyone as it’s not my place to do so. I pride myself on my discretion and integrity. However, if you wish to announce your wealth to the whole damned club, be my guest! And you’re right; you aren’t like the others, because no one is as infuriating as you are!”

Eros threw his arms up in frustration and stormed off.

“Did I mention you look stunning when you’re angry?” Edward called after him.

Eros grabbed a champagne glass off a passing waiter’s tray and hurled it at Edward. “Go fly a kite!”

With a laugh, Edward managed to jump out of the way in the nick of time, the glass shattering on the floor where he’d been standing. By the time he looked up, Eros was nowhere in sight.

“I think he likes me.”

In His Corner and Writing Update

In His Corner CCochetHello all! As some of you may have noticed, In His Corner is currently unavailable. Its one year contract with Torquere Press came to an end a few days ago, as my story was part of their Charity Sip Blitz. So what’s going to happen to my little story now? Well, I hope to make it not so little, and get it re-published. Why? Because the original word limit was 8000, and as I was writing it, Jessie and Eli really grew on me–as my fellas have a habit of doing.

I’d done a good deal of research regarding 1920’s boxing, much of which I didn’t really get to use, and I kept thinking about how much more I could do with the story, how it could really benefit from being longer.

While I loved the short story, I only just managed to dip into Eli and Jessie’s personalities, not to mention their history. With Jessie especially, I felt there was a great deal more to him than what I was able to fit in with the original word count. I really want to go more in-depth with him and what he went through when he lost everything, how it wore him down, stripped him of his confidence, and then how everything changed when Eli came back into his life.

Once I wrap up some of the stories I’m working on, I hope to give Eli and Jessie the opportunity to tell their story without a word count limit. I’m thinking novella, but who knows, it may even become full length. For those who enjoyed the short story, don’t worry, none of it will be lost, it will just be incorporated into the new story but with a lot more added in.  Boxing during the 1920s was fascinating, with its legendary figures, celebrities attending matches, and the gangsters and bootleggars of the time trying to muscle in on the action. There was excitement a plenty, and I hope to capture a little bit of that.

On the writing front, Johnnie’s third edits are going back today, so *fingers crossed* next should be the galley. I’ve got some fun stuff to share with you regarding the book as soon as it hits Dreamspinne’s ‘Coming Soon’ page which I hope will be… er coming soon. I imagine Jack’s book will be in soon for first edits as well. I don’t have a release date for Johnnie’s book as of yet, but I’ll be sure to let you all know when I do. I’ll also be posting more about the story soon, so stay tuned!

In His Corner is now available!

Hello everyone! I’m pleased to announce that my short story In His Corner is now available for purchase from Torquere Press as part of their Annual Charity Sip Event.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of this story is going to NOH8 with Torquere Press matching the donations. Check out all the authors who are taking part in this wonderful event here.

In His Corner takes place during the 1920s at the height of boxing, and centers around Eli and his hero– a rough-around-the-edges boxer, whose career is a far cry from what it was five years ago when he was the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

Blurb:

When Eli’s uncle Jasper mentions needing a cornerman for former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jessie “The Demon” Dalton, Eli jumps at the chance. Having had his heart broken by the man five years earlier, not only is Eli determined to get some answers, but he has no intention of letting Jessie push him out of his life a second time around. However when he comes to face to face with Jessie, it becomes very clear to Eli how much Jessie needs him in his corner, and in his life. All he has to do is convince Jessie of that.

Excerpt:

“You’re going to freeze something off standing there like that.”

“Jesus!” With a sputter, Jessie pushed away from the wall, and instinctively threw his hands over his groin to maintain whatever dignity he had left. Despite being successful on that venture, he couldn’t see a damned thing. His hair was plastered down over his eyes, and when he tried to blow it away, Eli’s chuckle told him he was getting nowhere fast.

“Here, let me help you.” Eli’s voice was soft, sweet, and not at all helpful to Jessie’s current predicament. He felt tender fingers across his brow and soon he could see again.

“What are you doing in here?” Jessie took a small step away from Eli, who was standing there giving him the up and down, which again, wasn’t helping him any.

“You forgot your towel,” Eli replied innocently as he held out the item in question. Jessie quickly snatched it away, and looked down at himself. “You’re going to need both hands,” Eli added, a devilish gleam in his bright eyes. So much for the kid being shy around him.

Ignoring Jessie’s protest, Eli took the towel back from him, and closed the distance between them. As he wrapped the towel around Jessie’s waist, Eli pressed himself against Jessie, and — being the dope that he was — Jessie couldn’t keep himself from looking down at the kid, a gesture that had their lips nearly touching. All Eli had to do was lean in. To Jessie’s relief, and perhaps even disappointment, Eli pulled away.

“Pull your arms out.”

Jessie did as instructed, and Eli secured the towel tightly. With a nod of thanks, Jessie cleared his throat, and motioned toward the door. “You should go. Someone’s bound to come in here any moment.”

“So? I’m your cornerman. Besides, it’s not like you fellas don’t all shower in front of each other.”

“That’s different,” Jessie murmured, telling himself he was too old to be getting sappy. Taking the initiative, he walked around Eli and back into the locker room where his clothes were. Again, the place was empty. Usually the closer it got to dinnertime, the busier the locker room was, but today, of all days, no one was goddamn hungry. Typical.

“How’s it different?” Eli asked, following close behind.

“You know how so. Don’t be a pill.” Jessie swiped his underwear up from his stack of clothes, turned, and nearly collided with Eli. For crying out loud, why did he have to get so close?

“No, I don’t know,” Eli said, crossing his arms over his chest. “I thought I did, but then I remember the blonde who opened your front door in her nightie.”

“What the hell are you talking about? What blonde?”&nbsp

“Nothing,” Eli said with a sigh. “Never mind. I’ll wait for you outside.”

Before Jessie could so much as utter a syllable, Eli was gone. Great, now the kid was in a lather with him and he had absolutely no idea why. Next time he saw Jasper, Jesse was going to strangle him. Quickly, he got dressed, then pulled his bag out of his locker, snatched up his jacket and cap from the coat rack, and thundered out of the gym. Now he had a nice long ride into Manhattan to look forward to. That wasn’t going to be awkward at all.

WIP Wednesday: A Rose by Any Other Name

workinprogressWelcome to this week’s WIP Wednesday. Seeing as how my Love Is Always Write story, Roses in the Devil’s Garden has gone up, I’m going to share a snippet of the second story in this series, A Rose by Any Other Name, which takes place two years later in 1927.

Julius Knight is at the top of his game. As the leading act at The Pantheon— an Ancient Greek themed Cabaret at Club Parisian, Julius uses his beauty and charm to enchant and bring wealthy men to their knees. They lavish him with money, expensive gifts, and adoration. Life is fast, frivolous, and free. But appearances can be deceiving, and it will take department store heir Edward Clarence, to show Julius that not only is real love more than just a fantasy, it also doesn’t come with a price tag.

In this scene, Julius and Edward meet for the first time. It’s Edward’s 30th birthday, and he’s just returned to New York after spending 5 years abroad working in his father’s London and Paris office.  To celebrate, his wayward cousin Maxfield, and best friend, Albert, have dressed Edward up in a (revealing and rather short) Chlamys, and now he somehow finds himself in Julius’ dressing room.

Chapter Three

Julius turned and the witty remark died on his lips. “You’re not Ares.”

The man sitting in his favorite white armchair looked down at himself as if to verify the fact. “No,” he replied with a shake of his head, a smile tugging the corner of his mouth as he looked back up at Julius. “Merely a mortal.”

Amusing fellow, Julius thought wryly. “I see.” He cocked his head to one side, his gaze brazenly raking over every inch of the man. How had he managed to get in? Granted, many have tried, but none had succeeded, not without Julius’ approval. Yet, here he was, looking as if he wanted to be somewhere else. Not the usual response he was accustomed to, and certainly not from a man who had somehow broken into his dressing room.

Assessing the man, he had to admit, the fellow was rather pleasing to the eye, plenty-rugged, if not a little stiff. He was handsome, muscular, broad- shouldered. Nice legs, Julius mused, nice toes, too. Hygiene was non-negotiable. He preferred his men in shape, clean, and trimmed. All of which his mystery guest seemed to be. Despite being a little on the old fashioned side, the fellow’s black hair was neatly parted on one side. He had a nice tan that made his sharp hazel eyes stand out, a bottom lip fuller than the top, smooth chiseled jaw, and enough hair to make him perceptibly masculine without turning him into a fur coat. He wasn’t anything to write home about. At least that was Julius’ initial thought. However, on further inspection, there was something about the slight fidget, the hands clasped between the knees, the fascination in his gaze as he looked around the room that held Julius’ attention. It was almost… sweet.

Well, that just wouldn’t do at all. Julius sauntered over, bringing the most amusing little jump from his guest as he perched himself on the chair’s armrest and swung his legs up, delicately resting his feet on the man’s thigh. His handsome guest swallowed visibly and Julius smiled at the man’s obvious discomfort.

“What’s your name, sailor?” Julius purred, slipping his fingers into that thick jet-black hair. It was surprisingly silky and soft, not saturated with pomade. Unfortunately some of his guests wore so much of the stuff; Julius feared they might go up in flames at any moment. Considering how much smoking went on in the place, he surprised it hadn’t happened already.

“Edward,” the man stated as if he were standing before a court judge, his chest rising and falling a little quicker now.

“And what do you do for a living, Edward?” Julius asked.

“I’m a business manager, for Clarence & Co. Department Stores,” Edward replied a little nervously.

Julius should have known. Just another dapper daddy out for a night of scandalous behavior before returning to his office desk in the morning, pretending for all the world that his soul wasn’t as damned as the wanton degenerate he had had his way with the night before. After all, they were all ‘normal’ men, while men like Julius were the deviants.

They were all the same, and the more money they had, the worse they were. Julius was no fool. He knew these frivolous times wouldn’t last. Which was why—he reminded himself—he smiled and batted his lashes for men like Edward. Poor fellow, he was clearly in over his head. Julius was rather certain he hadn’t seen him around here before. He would have remembered.

“And what exactly where you hoping for, Edward?” Julius asked, his right hand caressing Edward’s cheek. He made his way slowly down his neck, over his collarbone, down his chest. His middle finger ghosted over Edward’s nipple, bringing a gasp from him. And he was wonderfully responsive to the touch.  Hm…

Julius had to admit he was enjoying himself more than he thought he would. By now, anyone else would have been groping, gripping, and spanking. Oh, but he did enjoy a good spanking, but not from just anyone. From the right person, it was titillating. From the wrong person, it irritated Julius to the point of physical retaliation, as in a good slap to face and an end to the evening. Edward looked like he was going to pass out at any moment, whether from fright or pleasure was anyone’s guess.

“Nothing,” Edward replied when he found his voice.

“Nothing?” Julius pouted, sliding one foot down Edward’s thigh and under his costume until his toes found what he was looking for, giving Edward a start. “Oh, but this doesn’t feel like nothing to me. In fact, it feels like something, a very big and hard something.” And that was no lie. Dear, dear Edward was deliciously endowed. Shame he was such a wet blanket.
Edward gave a nervous laugh. “Sorry, I’m a little uh…”

“Excited?” Julius finished for him with a wicked smile.

“Yes, well, difficult not be under such circumstances.” Edward slowly and carefully nudged Julius’ foot away from his groin. Well now, wasn’t this just dandy? First time anyone had ever pushed him away. Julius could certainly have some fun with this one.

Well, hope you all enjoyed that! I’ll let you know on the progress of the story. Oh, and Harley and Nate show up in this story, too. ;
